This course applies to operators who may be called upon to control minor hazardous material spills in the workplace.



Pre-entry Requirements:
Language and literacy requirements from the unit are:

  • Writing is required to the level of completing written assessments.
  • Reading is required to enable the determination of information through the student manual.
  • Students are required to have the physical abilities to successfully complete the practical applications of the course.

The general purpose of this course is to develop the skills and knowledge required to prevent any minor spill incidents from escalating. In the event of an incident this person may be expected to respond with spill kits in line with procedures.


The course content focuses on procedures required in controlling a hazardous spill incident by providing the learner with the:
a.    ability to evaluate and assess a spill incident
b.    ability to identify the hazards arising from a spill incident including raising the alarm and appropriate response to control a spill incident using specific spill kits
c.    ability to control the spill incident including confinement, equipment selection and use of specific spill kits
d.    ability to clear the spill incident area, monitor and handover to specialist response personnel
e.    ability to conclude the spill incident control including reporting procedures and debriefing

Unit of Competency

MSMWHS205 Control minor incidents

Assessment will be conducted through actual demonstration of competency and written and oral testing of underpinning knowledge. Assessment for this unit of competency will be by simulation of workplace practices.

Delivery Method:
Training will be delivered utilising theory and practical activities. Delivery will include trainer led presentations / scenarios.
